Chiropractic Treatment for Whiplash

Tremendous forces are generated when a moving object stops suddenly, as in a traffic accident. When these forces are applied to the human neck, the head is forced back and forth, moving beyond the normal limits. The tendons, ligaments and muscles are over stretched and occasionally torn. The pressure generated on the disc may cause bulging or, in extreme cases, herniation (rupture). Spinal joints are traumatized and their motion restricted. The nerve roots and sometimes even the spinal cord itself are stretched, causing serious irritation. This soft tissue damage results in instability that can cause headaches, dizziness, blurred or fuzzy vision, ringing in the ears, pain in the neck, arms and hands, loss of strength and limited movement.

Whiplash is usually thought to be the result of being struck from the rear. However, it may occur with impact from any direction. And not all whiplashes occur in the neck. Lower back whiplash is also common, especially in cars with only lap-type seat belts.

Consult your chiropractor immediately after an accident. He will perform a thorough case history and examination, which will probably include x-rays, unless they were taken in the emergency room immediately after the accident.

Based upon the findings, he will establish a treatment program to reduce the pain and return you to full health. Treatment may include the application of ice to reduce inflammation. Sometimes a cervical collar is recommended to help stabilize the neck, especially during the initial more acute stage. Chiropractic adjustments will be an integral part of your care throughout the recovery period. Sometimes specific exercises are prescribed along with other modalities such as massage therapy, physical therapy, and rehabilitation courses.

Your motor vehicle or health insurance should cover the cost, leaving you no out-of-pocket expense. Check with your chiropractor regarding any concerns you may have.
